grandad’s boat | дедушкина лодка

A personal piece, an ode, a documentary, or a story of my grandfather Leonid. This is a narrative, his narrative, but as my grandfather, and as all grandfather figures, his narrative is also in extension mine. Our stories are interwoven, and his project — his boat — and my participation & documentation of it are both stories born from affection and love.

When my grandmother passed away, a door closed for my grandfather. But, as they say, when one door closes, another opens. During this period of grieving, Leonid was compelled to search for himself again. He looked to himself, to his own life, searching and bringing forth his inner-child to help him heal.

The discovery? Boat-building & sailing.

These were the activities of his childhood— filled with smiles, laughs, and lots of friends. He remembered the endeavors of his youth and wanted to revive them. So, for three years, he built a boat. At first, it began in his garage. I helped when and with whatever I could, documenting and photographing the process: the passing down of knowledge from one generation to the other, using our hands, and strengthening our bond.

In the end, the boat was a success! Leonid finished what he had set out to accomplish, feeding his inner-child, healing, and also sharing what he had created with all of us— family and friends. We use the boat in the summer, and he has taught us how to sail and steer.

As I said, this story is his, and in extension it is a part of mine. I will carry this knowledge and love with me wherever I go.
